Globe temperature

Black Globe thermometer for measuring radiant temperature.

Description

The standard globe thermometer consists of a black-painted copper sphere with a diameter of 150 mm and a thickness of 0.4 mm.

It contains a thermometer with its bulb at the center of the sphere. This sensor is described in the ISO7726 standard. Main scope of the globe temperature measurement in meteorological applications is the possibility of estimate the Mean Radiant Temperature (Tmrt) which is one of the most important meteorological parameters governing human energy balance and the thermal comfort of man in micrometeorological measurements.

  • Accurate temperature measurement (0,1°C);
  • Design made in compliance to ISO7726 standard;
  • High absorption paint on the copper globe (>0.98);
  • IP66 protection grade;

  • Availability of external converters for 4-20 mA e Mod-bus-RTU outputs;
  • In house ISO17025 accreditate calibration laboratory;
  • Model codes: DMA131A, DMA131.1, PRTEA4922.

What is a black globe thermometer used for?

A globe thermometer measures black globe temperature, a parameter that combines the effects of air temperature, ventilation, and thermal radiation. This measurement is useful for assessing the thermal load perceived by people more realistically and for estimating mean radiant temperature.

Why is a globe thermometer important for calculating microclimatic indices?

Thermal radiation can significantly affect heat perception even when air temperature remains unchanged. Globe temperature is used directly in the calculation of WBGT and makes it possible to estimate mean radiant temperature, which is required for indices such as PMV/PPD and UTCI. A reliable measurement therefore improves the representativeness of the overall microclimatic assessment.

Can a black globe thermometer also be used in smart cities and Health & Safety applications?

Yes. In smart cities, it can be installed in pedestrian areas, squares, parks, schools, and urban infrastructure to monitor heat exposure and analyse the effects of the urban heat island. In Health & Safety applications, it supports the assessment of workers’ heat stress in construction sites, industrial plants, warehouses, and outdoor workstations, where solar radiation or process-generated heat may increase the risk.

Which features make the LSI LASTEM black globe thermometer reliable?

The sensor uses a 150 mm black copper sphere with the sensing element positioned at its centre, following the configuration described in ISO 7726. It offers a declared accuracy of 0.1 °C, a high-absorptivity surface, IP66 protection, and integration options through 4–20 mA or Modbus-RTU signals. LSI LASTEM also has an internal ISO/IEC 17025 accredited laboratory for temperature measurements.
