This is the project featuring the<\/span><b> LSI LASTEM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> weather station installed at the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/iissvolta.edu.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Alessandro Volta High School<\/b><\/a><b> in Palermo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a historic institution with over fifty years of activity and around 1,400 students.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This long-standing collaboration is a concrete example of how the integration of professional environmental monitoring systems in schools can create value for the local area, for institutions, and for the new generations of Green Economy professionals.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e41d21e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e41d21e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why meteorological and environmental monitoring is strategic today\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4b7945c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4b7945c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collecting reliable meteorological and environmental data in a densely urbanized area like Palermo means continuously observing the <\/span><b>evolution of local weather and climate conditions, air quality, and the interactions between the atmosphere, sea and city<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is not just a \u00abweather forecast,\u00bb but also provides essential information for risk prevention, safety, and land-use planning.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> meteorological station<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> installed at the A. Volta Institute also plays a <\/span><b>key role <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for the <\/span><b>local community<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The data collected is used at the request of environmental monitoring institutions and supports studies and analyses useful for urban and sustainable development policies. In this scenario, the school takes on the role of a true scientific hub, capable of disseminating data and expertise at the local, regional, and national levels, while also strengthening students&#8217; civic sense and environmental awareness.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52f87f2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"52f87f2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">An educational project that evolves over time<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e2b707e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e2b707e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project&#8217;s history is an example of continuous technological evolution. Between <\/span><b>1999 and 2004<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, thanks to European ERDF funding, the A. Volta Institute invested in <\/span><b>LSI LASTEM analog meteorological and agro-meteorological instrumentation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, becoming one of the first Italian schools to disseminate science and education nationwide, including through nationally formatted television programs such as the historic \u00ab<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambiente Italia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ab.<\/span><\/p><p><b>2015 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marked the decisive <\/span><b>transition to digital<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with funding from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mur.gov.it\/it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ministry of Universities and Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the acquisition, management, and interpretation of data using advanced IT platforms. <\/span><b>From 2021 to 2024<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the project will enter a new <\/span><b>phase of experimentation and research<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on environmental sustainability and portable weather and environmental monitoring systems, with the A. Volta Institute leading a network involving ten high schools across the country.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project&#8217;s value is strengthened by leading institutional collaborations, such as those with <\/span><b>ENEA <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 in particular the Lampedusa Climatological Observatory \u2013 and with the <\/span><b>Sicilian Region<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the Sicilian Region&#8217;s Agrometeorological Information Service (SIAS), for the validation and use of meteorological and environmental data.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d0fcaf elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4d0fcaf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">LSI LASTEM technology at the heart of the system\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9bc312 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f9bc312\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technical heart of the project is LSI LASTEM technology. The <\/span><b>weather station<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> integrates latest-generation digital instrumentation designed to ensure reliable and continuous measurements.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The system is based on advanced <\/span><b>data loggers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as E-Log and Alpha-Log, which <\/span><b>manage a broad set of meteorological sensors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: an anemometer, a thermo-hygrometer, a barometer, a rain gauge, and a pyranometer. These are complemented by other instruments for environmental monitoring and air quality, including sensors for PM2.5, CO\u2082, CO, NO\u2082, and ground-level ozone, as well as a UV-A radiometer.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A distinctive feature is the <\/span><b>storm front sensor<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an exclusive technology that allows the tracking of electrical charges in the atmosphere and supports early warning systems for the presence of strong storms and thunderstorm fronts. This is an increasingly important aspect in a weather-climate context characterized by extreme events and increasingly tropical phenomena.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project also includes<\/span><b> indoor monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with sensors experimentally installed in classroom-laboratories used daily by students, to monitor CO\u2082, TVOC, and PM10, actively contributing to health and well-being in school environments. All data is processed using <\/span><b>professional software <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as 3DOM and Gidas Viewer.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2aaac00 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"2aaac00\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">From laboratory teaching to professional training\n\n\n\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b716ac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b716ac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The use of professional weather and environmental monitoring tools allows for moving beyond traditional teaching, transforming <\/span><b>lessons <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">into <\/span><b>concrete experimental experiences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students don&#8217;t just study atmospheric physics from textbooks; they analyze real-world data, learn to process and interpret it, and understand its impact on key sectors such as land management, sustainable agriculture, and tourism.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This approach also fosters greater awareness of climate change. Aspects such as tropicalization, desertification, the conscious use of natural resources, and recycling become an integral part of the curriculum, especially in new areas related to biotechnology and green chemistry.
