Greenhouses are becoming truly connected ecosystems, where <\/span><b>environmental monitoring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays a fundamental role in ensuring sustainability, energy efficiency and crop quality.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the backdrop for the <\/span><b>Life Agro-PV project<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, funded by the <\/span><b>PNRR \u2013 NextGenerationEU<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which combines two worlds: solar energy and precision agriculture.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the experimental greenhouses involved, <\/span><b>LSI LASTEM&#8217;s advanced sensors <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interact with <\/span><b>flexible solar-tracking photovoltaic modules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It&#8217;s an intelligent collaboration: the sensors collect data on temperature, humidity, and radiation, while the panels produce energy and regulate shading. Together, they create an integrated system that makes crops more <\/span><b>resilient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>efficient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>sustainable<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c18cdb9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c18cdb9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Life Agro-PV Project\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b6e8a20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b6e8a20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, coordinated by the University of Catania, takes shape within the framework of a cascade call for proposals of Spoke 1 \u201cSolar: PV, CSP, CST\u00bb by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/fondazionenest.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NEST Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, coordinated by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unipa.it\/mobilita\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>University of Palermo<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the mission of developing an <\/span><b>innovative and replicable agrivoltaic system<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This initiative brings together scientific research, technology and agriculture: universities, companies and agricultural enterprises collaborate to experiment with new models of <\/span><b>integration between energy production and sustainable cultivation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition to the University of Catania, through the Departments of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (DIEEI), Civil Engineering and Architecture (DICAr), and Agriculture, Food and Environment (Di3A), the <\/span><b>San Demetrio agricultural company<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which hosts the <\/span><b>experimental greenhouses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/international.unime.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>University of Messina<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unict.it\/it\/terza-missione\/spin-off\/wedest-srl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WEDEST srl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a spin-off of the University of Catania, and the company GB Innovative, which oversaw the implementation, are participating.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4a48ab5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4a48ab5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Objectives of the Life Agro-PV Project\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-caf6aeb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"caf6aeb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Life Agro-PV project <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aims to integrate <\/span><b>next-generation photovoltaic modules<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into agricultural greenhouses. The goal is twofold:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimize <\/span><b>renewable energy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> production through solar tracking of photovoltaic panels;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To <\/span><b>ensure proper sunlight exposure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the optimal growth of crops, while simultaneously monitoring the main <\/span><b>environmental parameters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that affect the greenhouse microclimate.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-049107c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"049107c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why monitor the greenhouse environment\n\n\n\n\n<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-349d174 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"349d174\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a greenhouse, even a<\/span><b> few degrees<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of temperature difference and insufficient solar radiation can <\/span><b>affect <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><b>growth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>quality <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>yield of crops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Continuous monitoring of the physical variables of the environment allows for the identification of microclimatic imbalances, optimization of ventilation and irrigation, reduction of waste, and improvement of productivity.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal is therefore to transform environmental data into <\/span><b>actionable information<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: knowing the temperature, humidity, radiation, and thermal comfort in real time enables targeted interventions, improving both agronomic performance and energy efficiency.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-27db16e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"27db16e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The LSI LASTEM Monitoring Solution\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-61e0e35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"61e0e35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three complete LSI LASTEM weather stations were installed for Life Agro-PV, measuring:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air temperature and humidity,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wind and atmospheric pressure,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solar radiation,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soil temperature and humidity,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature of the photovoltaic modules.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All data are collected by <\/span><b>LSI LASTEM data loggers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and transmitted in real time to the <\/span><b>ENVIRO CUBE<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> platform, which allows agronomists and researchers to:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Access data in real time and remotely,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compare greenhouses with and without photovoltaics,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set automatic alerts,<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generate reports and historical analyses.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These tools enable <\/span><b>quick data-driven decisions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: adjusting panel placement, adapting ventilation, or preventing crop stress.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c834c4b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c834c4b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The microclimate control\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f1e3a8b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f1e3a8b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to standard meteorological parameters, it is possible to determine the <\/span><b>WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> index, which combines the thermal effect of temperature, humidity and solar radiation.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although commonly used to assess human heat stress, in this case it also provides valuable information on the <\/span><b>thermal balance of the greenhouse and crops<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The WBGT allows us to evaluate worker comfort, ventilation effectiveness, and the impact of microclimatic conditions on plants, helping to refine growth forecasting models.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b509101 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b509101\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Challenges and future prospects\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bf5d4de elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bf5d4de\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the initial phases of the project, challenges arose related to sensor calibration and the effects of shading. However, initial analyses show promising results: <\/span><b>lettuce grown under the panels <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exhibits lower evaporation and greater water efficiency than those grown in full sun. In the coming months the system may be further enhanced with <\/span><b>new sensors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CO\u2082, vaporization, gas) and i<\/span><b>ntegration with automation systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for autonomous microclimate management.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project, which ended on October 31, 2025, represents a decisive step towards the <\/span><b>large-scale replicability<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of sustainable agricultural models.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-580d974 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"580d974\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">A model for the sustainable agriculture of the future\n\n\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2b1e410 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2b1e410\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental monitoring in greenhouses demonstrates how innovation in photovoltaics, advanced sensors and data analysis can coexist for more efficient, conscious and resource-friendly agriculture.
