The\u00a0Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management<\/strong>\u00a0(GISTM<\/em>), developed through the\u00a0Global Tailings Review\u00a0<\/em>(GTR<\/a>), is the\u00a0first global agreed<\/strong>\u00a0standard of its kind.
It establishes the rules regarding the safe\u00a0management of Tailings\u2019 Dams<\/strong>\u00a0that must be applied in all mining plants, wherever they are and whoever manages them.<\/p>

Despite the\u00a0tight deadline of August 2023<\/strong>, the global mining industry still seems to be far from achieving the objectives set by the GISTM, despite the high frequency of Tailings Dams collapses is showing no signs of decrease. The sad trend is also reported by\u00a0Mining.com<\/a>.<\/p>

In order to comply with GISTM, LSI LASTEM proposes a disruptive innovation meant for the monitoring of the structural integrity of Tailings Dams. The\u00a0G.Re.T.A.<\/a>\u00a0system<\/strong>\u00a0(Geoelectrical Resitivimeter for Time-lapse Analysis<\/em>), is a\u00a0geo-resistvimeter<\/strong>\u00a0designed for\u00a0fixed installations<\/strong>, which measures the evolution over time of the subsoil resistivity profile.<\/p>

As known, the\u00a0structural integrity<\/strong>\u00a0of the earthen body of the Tailings Dams largely depends on the\u00a0saturation level<\/strong>\u00a0of the soil. Given the fact that the resistivity of the soil varies with the water content, the advantage of G.Re.T.A. is\u00a0early warning<\/strong>. The system, in fact, can detect initial\u00a0water seepages<\/strong>\u00a0that could potentially undermine the structural integrity, and so the safety, of the dam.<\/p>

Resistivity measurements of the dams\u2019 body structure are preformed on a pre-set regular basis and are continuously transmitted to a\u00a0cloud<\/a>\u00a0platform<\/strong>. The platform compares them with those of previous periods, sending\u00a0alerts<\/strong>\u00a0where the values \u200b\u200bexceed pre-set thresholds.<\/p>

Unlike the piezometric measurements which are \u201cpunctual\u201d, the resistivity measurements performed by the G.Re.T.A. system are made on\u00a0sections<\/strong>\u00a0of hundreds of meters. Furthermore, they allow an\u00a0estimation of the water content<\/strong>\u00a0of the soil and not just the determination of the water table.<\/p>

The adoption of\u00a0G.Re.T.A.\u00a0has been defined as a \u201cQuantum Leap in Tailings Dams Monitoring<\/strong><\/em>\u201d: a powerful solution to keep under control, in real time, the hydrological processes that occur inside the dams\u2019 body structure, finally preventing the risk of collapse.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
