Energy efficiency<\/b>\u00a0is a highly relevant topic in building design and construction. Not only it helps to significantly\u00a0reduce<\/b>\u00a0global emissions<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0energy consumption<\/b>, but it must go hand in hand with the\u00a0well-being<\/b>\u00a0of the building\u2019s\u00a0indoor environment<\/b>.<\/p>

In this context,\u00a0MEZeroE<\/b><\/a>\u00a0was born, a research project funded by the European Commission under the H2020 program, related to the call\u00a0\u201cNMBP-05-2020 \u2013 Open Innovation Test Beds for functional materials for building envelopes\u201d<\/i>, whose main objective is to\u00a0promote innovation and standardisation in the construction sector<\/b>, in order to contribute substantially to the\u00a0transformation of the European building heritage<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

An overview of the building envelope\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The\u00a0building envelope<\/b>\u00a0is made up of systems such as the roof, the facade (including walls, windows and doors) and the underground waterproofing elements (those that are below ground level). In summary, it is that\u00a0set of elements which delimit the perimeter of a building<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Into the heart of the project\n<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the central elements of the project is the\u00a0BEEpilot (Building Energy Efficiency pilot)<\/b>, a\u00a0pilot building<\/b>\u00a0with envelopes built with dry multi-layer technology, located on the Lecco Campus of the Milan Polytechnic. This laboratory represents the heart of the project, an environment in which analyses are conducted and the environmental data collected are studied to\u00a0evaluate<\/b>\u00a0the\u00a0performance of the building envelopes<\/b>\u00a0and identify any improvements.<\/p>

Researchers analyse energy expenditure and identify the\u00a0most suitable materials\u00a0<\/b>for thermal insulation. Wood was used as the main material for the casing, in order to evaluate the durability and effectiveness of this material, an important theme in the research project.<\/p>

The BEEPilot pilot building features an\u00a0innovative architecture<\/b>, with the ability to rotate 270\u00b0, remove vertical closures and even the roof. This is a key feature to study the impact of solar exposure on the building, as orientation and exposure play an important role in energy efficiency.<\/p>

Furthermore, there are\u00a0two test rooms<\/b>\u00a0in which the temperature and humidity levels are constantly monitored and the effects on the energy flows are studied.<\/p>

The main\u00a0objective<\/b>\u00a0of the project is to support and\u00a0promote innovation<\/b>\u00a0and standardization\u00a0in the building sector<\/b>, contributing to the transformation of the EU\u2019s building stock.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The\u00a0MEZeroE consortium<\/b>\u00a0represents a\u00a0large portion of the European continent<\/b>, and the numerous partners involved in the project can be grouped into four categories:<\/p>

  • Industry (IND)<\/b>, which includes small, medium and large companies\u00a0(FOCCHI SpA, VELUX AS, WINDOWMASTER International A\/S, FLEXBRICK SL, HELIATEK GMBH, Tecnologia Navarra de Nanoproductos SL, FLEXANDROBUST Systems Spolka Z Ograniczona Odpowiedzialnoscia, ROTHO BLAAS SRL, RIKO Hise Proizvodnja In Trzenje D.O.O., INDRESMAT SL)<\/i>;<\/li>

    Systems useful to the project<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    To evaluate the performance of building envelopes, the MEZeroE project uses\u00a0advanced environmental monitoring instruments<\/b>, such as, among others,\u00a0LSI LASTEM\u00a0<\/b>air flow, temperature and humidity sensors. The systems used are plug and play, easy to install and cloud-based, allowing for accurate and continuous monitoring of both internal and external environmental conditions. The BEEpilot is also equipped with a weather station for correlating internal environmental data with those acquired outdoors. Thanks to this data, the researchers can evaluate the effectiveness of the tested solutions and continuously improve the energy efficiency of the mini pilot building. An important aim, among others, is to convey the collected\u00a0data<\/b>\u00a0to a shared platform<\/b>\u00a0to be made available and analysed.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    The MEZeroE project, now in its\u00a0second year of activity<\/b>, aims to promote innovation and energy efficiency in the building envelope sector, creating an open and collaborative research ecosystem. Thanks to the use of advanced tools, innovative technologies and the participation of industrial partners, MEZeroE allows the study and performance verification of\u00a0materials and\/or innovative technological solutions for the envelope of almost zero energy buildings<\/b>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
